AI visibility is the question of whether and how often services like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name your business as a source. You can measure it without an expensive tool: ask your most important customer questions yourself, note the sources named, and repeat this regularly.
Why AI visibility needs its own measure
A good Google rank says little about whether an AI cites you. AI systems combine several sources into one answer and name only some of them. So it is worth looking separately at where your brand stands in these answers, apart from the classic rankings.
Measure in four steps
- Define questions: Collect 10 to 20 questions your customers really ask, from "what does ... cost" to "who offers ... in Zurich".
- Choose services: Check the same questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google search with AI Overviews and optionally Gemini.
- Document: For each question, record which sources are named and whether your brand is among them. A simple table is enough.
- Repeat: Do this once a month. Only repetition shows whether you are becoming more visible.
What to do when you are missing
If you appear nowhere, the basics are usually missing: clearly citable answers, access for the AI crawlers, an llms.txt, and mentions of your brand on other sites. How to get into the answers specifically is shown in the articles on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. An SEO audit uncovers the gaps.
This work belongs to GEO: visibility where more and more people search.
