llms.txt: what is it and does my website need one?

Jun 23, 2026 · 4 min · Daniel Giebelhaus

The llms.txt is a simple text file in the root of your website that explains, in clear and structured form, who you are, what you offer and which pages matter, to AI systems. For AI it is what robots.txt is for search engine crawlers: a signpost.

What it is good for

AI systems need to understand a website's content to cite it correctly. An llms.txt summarises the most important information compactly and unambiguously, without navigation, ads and distraction. That lowers the risk of the AI getting something wrong and raises the chance of being named correctly.

What belongs in it

A complementary llms-full.txt can additionally contain the detailed content if the AI needs more depth.

Who benefits?

Practically every business that wants to appear correctly in AI answers, and especially those with services that need explaining or multiple locations. The effort is low, the benefit a clear signal to AI systems. Importantly: llms.txt does not replace good content on the page, it complements it.
