AEO in practice: how your content becomes the direct answer

Jul 20, 2026 · 6 min · Daniel Giebelhaus

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means delivering the direct answer to a question instead of being just one result in the list. The goal is the preferred spot: the featured snippet on Google, the answer box, or a mention in an AI answer. In practice this comes down to a few concrete measures.

Answer blocks: one question, one clear answer

The most important lever is unspectacular: phrase your customer's question as a heading and give a clear answer of 40 to 60 words directly below it. That answer has to make sense on its own, without the rest of the page. These are exactly the blocks search engines and AI systems prefer to reuse.

Questions as headings and People Also Ask

Google shows a "People Also Ask" box for many searches. Knowing those questions and answering them in your own content raises your chance of appearing there and in the snippet. Use the real language of your customers as headings, not marketing slogans.

Winning featured snippets

For the highlighted answer at the top of Google's results, format matters: a concise definition for "what is" questions, a numbered list for "how do I" questions, a short table for comparisons. Give the search engine the format that fits the question.

Structured data as an amplifier

With FAQ and Article schema you make it easier for Google and AI to recognise your answers reliably. Schema does not replace a good answer, but it reinforces one. That holds for classic search as well as Google AI Overviews.

AEO is closely related to GEO. What AEO is in principle is explained in the article What is AEO?. Putting it to work on your website is what our AEO consulting does.
